  18. QUESTION: I had my ears pierced in a jewelry store when I bought a special
  19. pair of earrings. Now, several months later I have a large, dark, hard bump at
  20. the place where the hole was made that prevents me from wearing the earrings,
  21. and is terrible to look at.  What is this thing?  Is this due to the way the
  22. people pierced my ears?  Last question, is there anything I can do for this?

  27. ANSWER:  It is most probable that you have a "keloid" at the site of the
  28. puncture wound through your earlobe.  It may not be very pretty, but it is not
  29. a serious condition.  Keloids are the result of a healing process that has
  30. gone astray.  Instead of producing a normal scar, cells that produce collagen
  31. (a type of protein) work overtime, filling the defect and producing so much
  32. collagen that a bump is made that can grow above the normal skin surface.
  33. Although these scars are seen more often in blacks, anyone may develop them.
  34. They occur from penetrating or slicing injuries, such as ear piercing, and can
  35. develop even when all normal precautions for ear piercing have been observed.
  36. Treatments are available using high powered cortisone like drugs, which are
  37. injected into the scar.  Freezing with liquid nitrogen, followed by these
  38. injections, is also effective.
